A cot or a playpen is usually made of wood or metal. These are hard materials that can injure the baby when falling, when he starts trying to get up in the crib and take the first steps. In addition, usually the lateral parts of the crib are not solid, and bright sunlight, penetrating through them, can wake the crumb, especially the newborn early. No matter how well the bed is installed, it is unlikely to avoid drafts.
Solve these problems with a protective bumper for a cot with a soft filler. Such bows are a kind of limiter for the movements of the child. Some parents use pillow
Why and for how long are the skirts needed?
These are the three main components for which, in fact, the soft bumper in the crib for newborns was thought of:
They are designed to protect the baby from bruising, performing the functions of the limiter and the buffer when it falls, or from excessive lighting and drafts, and also to become the first developing stimulating game space for the baby.
The battens on the crib are a great way to get to know the baby with shapes, sizes and colors. Many manufacturers complete the beads with elements for the development of sensory systems( "pyschalkami", "rustling" and light elements, etc.).
. The next question for young parents is: from what age and to what extent do they need borders to the baby's crib? They can be used to protect a newborn from light and drafts, i.e. From an early age. Remove the sides from the bed should be when the need for them disappears or their presence begins to interfere with the baby. It depends on the pace of development of the crumbs and the decision of the parents. When the baby becomes sufficiently developed to start trying to get out of the arena, the sides should be removed, instead of performing the function of a limiter and a buffer( that is, protective), they themselves can cause a fall and injuries.
Material selection for fabric edge
The dimensions of the baby beds are standardized. This makes it easier to calculate the consumables and choose a pattern. Standard baby cot has parameters:
- length - 1.2 m;
- width - 0,6 m;
- height - 0.55 m.
Given these dimensions, it is easy to determine how much material is needed on the curbs in a baby cot - 3.6 meters. In addition, additional materials will be needed:
- locks, if you want the covers to be removable, 0.4 m. 4 pieces( it's better to use secret ones);
- filler - foam rubber from 10 to 30 mm thick, 3 x 3.6 m;
- decor elements( at will of the creator).
When choosing a material, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the perception of children and not only. It is advisable to pay attention to several main aspects:
- tissue density( it is worth choosing tight);
- naturalness( preferred natural fabrics: coarse calico, flax, etc.);
- coloring and drawing( it is desirable to choose bright fabrics with large patterns, oriented to children).
- tailoring scissors;
- tailoring needles or sewing needle with thread;
- tracing paper or other material for making a template;
- measuring instrument( meter and ruler);
- piece of chalk or soap;
- sewing machine( although the product can be sewn by hand in the literal sense, that is, manually).
Master-class for making bumpers
The sides consist of 2 pairs of elements that have rectangles in the base. The pairs have different lengths, but are identical in height:
- the 1st pair measures 1.2 x 0.3 m;
- 2nd pair - 0,6 x 0,3 m.
The bows will be fastened to the cot with the help of narrow straps, which must be provided when making such a gift for the baby by the hands. With them we will start our master class.
Sewing the ridge
What we need:
- rope - 9 m( diameter about 1 cm);
- fabric - 60 x 180 cm( this piece is enough and in order to make the tie, you can take the fabric a little wider, so there was a stock, in case something goes wrong);
- glued web;
We cut the fabric into 5 strips - 180 cm long and about 5 cm wide. The rest of the material is left for the strings. Next, combine the ends of our 5 bands to create one single, using adhesive tape and iron. We get as a result 1 strip of length about 8.2 m.
We put the rope in the middle of the tape, from the bottom edge we lay the glued cobweb.
Slightly drizzle with water, fold the tape in half and iron as close to the rope as possible.
So we go through the whole length, we get a long edge.
What we need:
- The rest of the fabric( recall, its dimensions are 35 x 180 cm);
- sewing machine;
first cut into strips 24, the size of each of which - 35 x 5 cm Take the first strip, folded in half and ironing( 1)..Fold each edge of the tape to the middle and iron( 2 and 3).Close the fold( 4).
What you will need:
- sewing machine thread
- fabric - 0.8 x 4.2 m, taking into account allowances( we will use the sample 2 for the front and rear sides of the flanges)
- filler - foam( from 1 to 3cm thick)
We need six identical pieces of foam, 30 x 60 cm Mark up fabric, given allowances, and cut into 12 pieces, the size of each of which are approximately 40 x 70( depending on foam thickness!).
We take the first piece of cloth, put it in the center of it foam and mark the boundaries. Next, we apply the second piece of material and join them together, taking into account the thickness of the future lining.
Sew two parts together. Repeat the same for the opposite side and 2 side. So, we got the front sides for our bumpers. Now do the same for the back sides. As a result, we should get 4 long pieces of cloth and 4 short pieces.
It's time to attach the edging and tie. Place the fabric with the wrong side down. Align the edge along the top of the fabric with the "rope" side to yourself. Cut the edge along the length of the fabric and secure it. Attach the strings: for long sides - 2 in the center and 1 at the edges;For short sides - 1 at the edges.
Place the corresponding opposite piece of cloth with the wrong side up and attach.
It turned out such a three-layer "tissue cake": the front side - the edge - the back( opposite) side. Ties must remain inside the "cake".
Now proceed to fastening the bottom row of the edge and the strings.
Do all the same( do not forget to "try on" foam rubber in order not to be mistaken).
Finally, fasten the two fabrics together on the right and left sides. Stitch it.
Remove the fabric. Stick the foam, make sure that the edges are folded inwards, and stitch it from above and below.
Our skirts are ready. Make sure that you have removed all the needles( !) And tie the bumpers to the crib.
If desired, one of the sides can not be stitched, but a velcro or a secret lock, then you can erase the cover. If the product is decorated with ruffles, a ruffle is placed on top of the straps, then the zipper is fastened upside down( lightning is stitched from the upper side of the rectangle, the sides and bottom are spent without lightning), the next element is placed on top. All parts can be swept by hand, or fixed with tailor's pins, to avoid bias when sostrachivanii. Before you pour down the bottom of the product, you should open the zipper. After finishing the work on the element, the rectangle is turned out, ironed, and a piece of filler of the appropriate size is placed in it.
